Vertical Mulching......can be extremely beneficial for trees growing in compacted soils. Roots need oxygen and therefore do not grow well in soils that are not porous enough to allow sufficient gas exchange. Holes are drilled into the ground using a two or three inch drill bit. They should be drilled about a foot deep and about three feet apart. The holes are then filled with organic matter. This allows air and water to penetrate down to the roots. |
